Lorem ipsum (shortly lipsum ) is a designation for standard pseudo-Latin text used in graphic design and drafting as demonstrative filler text while creating working samples of graphic designs (e.g. websites , magazine layouts or all kinds advertising materials ). In this way, Lipsum displays the text in sample mock-ups (so-called mock-ups) before meaningful content is inserted into the finished design.

If meaningful text were used for the same purpose, it would be difficult to evaluate the appearance alone without misleading the viewer into reading the content. If, on the other hand, nonsensical but regular text were used (e.g. repeating "asdf asdf asdf..."), the eye would be disturbed by the regular structure of the text, which differs from regular text, when judging the appearance. At first glance, lorem ipsum text resembles normal text, words are of different lengths, letter frequency is similar to normal speech, punctuation looks natural, etc.
